# WeChat Storage on Mac: Cache, Chat History, and Safe Cleanup

> WeChat disk use on a Mac is cache, chat history, downloads, and the app. Tell them apart, use in-app cleanup first, and keep chat history by default.

WeChat growing large on a Mac is common, but "taking up space" is really several
different things, and looking at them as one is how files get deleted by
mistake. The first step to reclaiming space is not deleting, it is telling apart
cache, chat history, downloads, and the app itself. Chat history is kept by
default; do not clear it as if it were cache.

This page splits WeChat's disk use on a Mac into layers, then explains what to do
with each. It uses "Mole" only for Mole for Mac at mole.fit and its own `mo`
command line tool. Note that Apple's Messages and WeChat are different apps; to
clear Messages attachments, see [clear Messages storage on
Mac](https://mole.fit/blog/how-to-clear-messages-storage-mac).

## Cache, chat history, downloads, and the app are not the same

Split WeChat's footprint into four kinds first, then handle one kind at a time.
To reclaim space, leave the chat history alone.

| Kind | Typical contents | What happens if you delete it | How to handle it first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cache | Avatars, cached Moments and Channels content, other temporary files | Rebuilt or fetched again when needed; no chat record lost | Clearable, prefer WeChat's own cache cleanup |
| Chat history | The message database and the images, videos, and files in your chats | May be the only copy; older media WeChat no longer keeps on its server cannot be downloaded again | Keep by default; back up or migrate first |
| Downloads | Files you saved locally, documents you received | You must fetch them again from the sender or the cloud | Confirm one by one; never delete a whole folder |
| App bundle | The WeChat app and the data it needs to run | Affects launch and login state | Touch only when uninstalling; leave it in daily use |

One sentence to decide: cache can go, chat history stays by default, downloads
are reviewed one by one, and the app bundle is left alone until you uninstall.

## What you can safely handle inside WeChat

Prefer WeChat's own storage management screen instead of deleting from system
folders by hand. The current Mac version has a storage or cache management entry
in Settings that clears temporary data by type. The exact label depends on the
WeChat version on your Mac, since interface wording changes. That storage screen
can also delete chat history, so if you only want space back, use its cache
option and leave the chat data options alone.

As you go, separate two things: files you can get again, from the sender or from
a copy you saved elsewhere; and chat history and chat media that exist only on
this Mac, where deleting means they are gone. Chat images and videos are not a
disposable copy: WeChat keeps media on its server only for a limited time, so
older ones that are no longer on this Mac show as expired and cannot be fetched
again. Clearing cache is not the same as clearing chats.

## Chat history: kept by default

The chat database and its local media are often the only local copy of those
conversations. It is not shaped like cache: cache is a temporary file that can be
rebuilt, while chat history is your data.

So before any destructive step, back up or migrate the chat history. WeChat has
its own chat migration and backup features; run one before uninstalling or
switching machines. How to save chats and attachments before removing the app is
in the [WeChat uninstall guide](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/wechat). Deleting chat history is
not a routine way to reclaim space, and it is not a safe cleanup.

## Where WeChat 4.x keeps its data

WeChat 4.x keeps each signed-in account in its own folder inside its container:
`~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/`.
Cache and chat data sit side by side in it:

| Folder inside `<account>` | What it holds | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| `db_storage` | The chat database | Never touch |
| `msg/file` | Files received in chats | Your data; save what you need, review one by one |
| `msg/attach`, `msg/video` | Chat images and videos, in month folders (`YYYY-MM`) | Review past months only; cleared media may not download again |
| `cache/<YYYY-MM>` | Moments and Channels cache, by month | Past months are cache |
| `temp/head_image` | Avatar cache | Cache |

The current month's folders are still being written while WeChat runs, so leave
them. On WeChat 3.x the older layout sits under
`~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Library/Application Support/com.tencent.xinWeChat/`,
where only each account's `Message/MessageTemp` is chat media cache and the rest
includes the chat database. Before you look inside any of these, quit WeChat with
⌘Q; closing its window leaves it running.

## Check the size with a disk view (do not guess GB)

Measure before you delete. Use Storage settings, or a disk analysis view such as
Mole Analyze, to find the WeChat-related folders and see how large they actually
are. How much WeChat uses varies a lot between Macs, so do not copy someone
else's GB figure; measure on your own machine.

Mole 1.15 lists WeChat in Clean's Communication section. With Full Disk Access it
adds the folders from the table above: past-month chat images (`msg/attach`) and
videos (`msg/video`), past-month `cache/<YYYY-MM>` folders, `temp/head_image`,
and on WeChat 3.x `Message/MessageTemp`. All of these are listed but not
selected. The current month is never listed, and `db_storage` and `msg/file`
never appear. The one WeChat row selected by default is the container's small
`Library/Caches` folder, and it only appears after WeChat has quit. Without Full
Disk Access, Mole lists nothing inside WeChat's container. If you check the chat
image or video rows, those months' images and videos leave this Mac, and any
that WeChat no longer keeps on its server cannot be downloaded again.

Scanning is free and needs no license, and you decide what to remove. A license
is only required to actually delete, and each paid tool runs twice for free
before asking. It will not treat your chat history as junk on your behalf.

## A safe order

1. Measure: read the real size of WeChat-related folders in Storage settings or a
   disk view.
2. Classify: use the table above to tell cache, chat history, downloads, and the
   app bundle apart.
3. Use WeChat's built-in cleanup and backup first, rather than going straight
   into system folders.
4. To review leftovers, quit WeChat completely first with ⌘Q; closing the window
   leaves it running.
5. Never delete WeChat's container or a folder with Tencent in its name as a
whole. The chat database is inside WeChat's own container, and other
Tencent-named folders can be shared with other Tencent apps.

For a general disk cleanup that has nothing to do with WeChat, [how to free up
space on Mac](https://mole.fit/blog/how-to-free-up-space-on-mac) is the ordered checklist.

## FAQ

### Does clearing cache lose my chat history?

Not if you clear only cache. Avatars and cached Moments or Channels content come
back when needed, and the chat database is untouched. Chat images, videos, and
files are different: once they are removed from this Mac, older ones that WeChat
no longer keeps on its server show as expired and cannot be downloaded again. Use
WeChat's own cache option rather than its chat data options, and do not delete
from system folders by hand.

### Does uninstalling WeChat delete my chat history?

Uninstalling the app is not the same as deleting the data. Chat history lives
separately in its container and database, and whether to remove it is a separate
choice. Back up or migrate with WeChat's own feature before uninstalling or
switching machines; the order is in the [WeChat uninstall
guide](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/wechat).

### Can I just delete the Library folders with WeChat or Tencent in the name?

No, not as whole folders. The chat database is inside WeChat's own container,
next to the cache, and other folders with Tencent in the name can be shared with
other Tencent apps such as QQ. A wrong delete cannot be recovered. Quit WeChat
completely, then review item by item rather than removing a folder by its name.

### Will Mole delete my chat history by default?

No. Mole never lists the chat database or received files, and it lists past
months of chat images and videos only as rows that are not selected. You review
before acting, which matches the review-before-delete approach in [is Mole
safe](https://mole.fit/blog/is-mole-safe): it asks you to confirm rather than clearing the record
for you.
