How to uninstall Godot on Mac

Godot ships as a single Godot.app with no installer, whether you download the universal zip from godotengine.org or install the Homebrew cask godot. Save your open projects before removing it: Godot keeps its own editor settings, export templates and cache separate from your project files, so review the editor data separately after removing the app.

    Quit and remove the app

    1. Quit Godot from its menu or Command + Q, then check Activity Monitor for Godot and confirm the process has exited.
    2. Move Godot.app from Finder's Applications folder to the Trash.
    3. If you installed it through Homebrew, the cask also links a godot command into Homebrew's bin folder; see the Homebrew section below. A direct download never creates that command.

    Where Godot keeps data

In Finder, press Shift + Command + G and open each location that exists.

Location What it holds What to do
~/Library/Application Support/Godot Export templates and editor settings, per Godot's own documentation Named after the app rather than its bundle ID; review before removing, especially if you've customized export templates
~/Library/Caches/Godot Editor-generated cache, per the same documentation Safe to remove after quitting
~/Library/Saved Application State/org.godotengine.godot.savedState Saved window state Remove with the app

Godot's own documentation also describes ~/.config/godot and ~/.local/share/godot, but those are its Linux paths; on macOS the same documentation puts editor data and settings in ~/Library/Application Support/Godot. The test Mac had neither Linux folder after first run, and neither Homebrew's zap list nor Mole's own scan names them. Godot data paths

    Check the result

    pgrep -il godot
launchctl list | grep -i godot
    command -v godot
    ls -d "$HOME/Library/Application Support/Godot" "$HOME/Library/Caches/Godot"

    • If pgrep completes without errors, no output means no process name matched godot; confirm the owner of any match before stopping it.
    • If the filtered launchctl check completes without errors and prints nothing, no matching line was listed in the current user session. A listed job needs its label and executable path checked before you treat it as belonging to this Godot installation.
    • command -v godot printing a path means the current shell can find that command, not that Homebrew owns it. Inspect the actual entry and its target with Finder or ls -l; use the ordinary cask uninstall below only when it is registered to your Homebrew godot installation. Keep a command from another installation or a regular file whose ownership is unconfirmed.
    • ls -d prints each folder that still exists and reports "No such file or directory" for the rest.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The godot cask's zap list reaches ~/Library/Application Support/Godot, ~/Library/Caches/Godot and your saved window state. The cask also links a godot command into Homebrew's bin folder (/opt/homebrew/bin on Apple silicon), which Homebrew removes together with the app. Running brew uninstall --cask --zap godot yourself moves all three to the Trash regardless of what you ticked in Mole. Homebrew Godot cask

When Mole removes a Homebrew install, it checks the zap list first. ~/Library/Application Support/Godot stays unselected while Remove data and settings with apps is off, the default. Enabling it can preselect eligible app-owned data; untick this row to preserve export templates and editor settings. If the zap list reaches an unchecked row, Mole omits --zap and removes only the selected leftovers.

To keep your export templates and editor settings, back up ~/Library/Application Support/Godot first, or remove only the app:

    brew uninstall --cask godot

    What Mole lists

For Godot installed from godotengine.org or the Homebrew cask:

    • ~/Library/Caches/Godot and the saved window state are selected by default.
    • ~/Library/Application Support/Godot is a user-data review row containing your export templates; its selection follows the option described above.
    • The Linux-only ~/.config/godot and ~/.local/share/godot paths are not listed, because the Mac editor doesn't write to them.

    What this test covered

Godot was installed with the Homebrew cask godot and uninstalled on September 17, 2026, with Mole Preview 272, alongside other apps in the same batch. That build still ran Homebrew's zap step, which cleared Application Support and Caches. No ~/.config/godot or ~/.local/share/godot folder had been written. Export templates, custom editor settings and the direct download from godotengine.org were not tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
