How to Uninstall Heptabase on Mac

Before removing Heptabase, use Settings › Backup › Export now and open the resulting ZIP. The Markdown is portable, while the archive also includes Heptabase-specific backup data; neither was exercised in the recorded unsigned-in test. The recorded test used a direct download, not a Homebrew installation.

Remove the app and inspect its data

Quit Heptabase and move Heptabase.app from Applications to Trash. Inspect local preferences and any project-meta support folder before deciding whether it is safe to clear. The cask zap currently names preferences and saved state, but not the separately observed project-meta folder. The folder is not proven to be the only workspace copy. Vendor guidance.

After quitting, copy wanted local state from the paths below to an independent private backup outside the removal folders and verify it. In Finder, press Shift + Command + G to open each path or its parent, then move only existing unneeded app-specific items to the Trash. Keep shared parents and other apps' files:

    • ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments/app.projectmeta.projectmeta.sfl*
    • ~/Library/Preferences/app.projectmeta.projectmeta.plist
    • ~/Library/Saved Application State/app.projectmeta.projectmeta.savedState
    • ~/Library/Application Support/project-meta

For a * pattern, open the parent in Finder and select only actual entries matching this app; preserve shared parents and any retained version’s data.

    Check the result

    ls -ld ~/Library/'Application Support'/project-meta ~/Library/Preferences/app.projectmeta.projectmeta.plist

Run this read-only check after quitting the app. A printed path still exists; “No such file or directory” means that path is absent, while a permission error needs its own investigation.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The Homebrew cask has a zap list that includes preferences and saved state, not the separately observed project-meta folder. Run the command below without --zap if you want to keep those files and inspect them separately. A manual --zap follows the whole cask list regardless of Mole’s checkboxes. Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or a removal scope it cannot verify; selected remnants still follow Mole's own removal flow.

    brew uninstall --cask heptabase

    What Mole lists

With Remove data and settings with apps off, the listed project-meta support review row starts unchecked; with it on, an eligible existing own unshared row may start checked. Verify an independent backup before deletion and uncheck data you want to retain. Bundle-ID preferences are normally selected. Do not infer cloud preservation from a first-run scan.

    What this test covered

The official 1.111.0 archive was copied and removed on September 20, 2026. At the time, the uninstall review showed only preferences and temporary cache. A separate disk check found Application Support/project-meta, which stayed on disk; the current scanner lists that exact folder for review. No sign-in, whiteboard or export was tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
