    Home/Apps tested with Mole

    Uninstall IINA on Mac

Back up any IINA plugins or custom keybinding schemes before you uninstall: Mole selects IINA's settings folder by default, and it holds your playback history and installed plugins along with the cache. These steps cover the direct download from iina.io and the Homebrew cask iina; the recorded tests used the Homebrew cask and the official download.

Quit IINA and remove the app

Finish playback, quit IINA from its menu, then move IINA from Applications to the Trash. If you installed it with Homebrew, brew also removes the iina command it linked to IINA.app/Contents/MacOS/iina-cli; a direct download has no such command unless you created one yourself.

    Where IINA keeps its data

Location What it holds What to do
~/Library/Application Support/com.colliderli.iina Settings, playback history and any installed plugins Selected by default in Mole. Back up plugins or export settings you want to keep before removing
~/Library/Caches/com.colliderli.iina Disk cache (thumbnails, subtitle lookups) Safe to remove with the app
~/Library/Preferences/com.colliderli.iina.plist App preferences Safe to remove with the app
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.colliderli.iina.savedState Window state Safe to remove with the app
~/Library/Logs/com.colliderli.iina Session logs, only present if you turned on file logging in Advanced settings Safe to remove with the app
~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.colliderli.iina, ~/Library/Cookies/com.colliderli.iina.binarycookies, ~/Library/WebKit/com.colliderli.iina State from IINA's built-in online subtitle search Safe to remove with the app
~/Library/Application Scripts/com.colliderli.iina.OpenInIINA and ~/Library/Containers/com.colliderli.iina.OpenInIINA The "Open in IINA" Safari extension Safe to remove once IINA is quit
~/Library/Application Support/CrashReporter/IINA*.plist and ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/IINA*.crash Crash reports Safe to remove

These paths come from the Homebrew IINA cask's zap list, which matches what the direct download from iina.io writes to the same locations; the log path is also documented in IINA's FAQ.

    Check the result

Run these read-only commands in Terminal:

    pgrep -ilf IINA
    ls -d "$HOME/Library/Application Support/com.colliderli.iina"
    command -v iina

No output from pgrep means IINA is not running. The ls command proves only whether this support directory exists; inspect its actual settings, history and plugins or a usable backup before relying on them. "No such file or directory" means this directory is absent, and a permission or other read error leaves its state unknown. command -v iina shows any iina entry this shell can resolve, including a manually created launcher. Inspect its path and target, remove only a confirmed stale link into the deleted IINA.app, and keep an entry another installation owns. No output means only that this shell cannot find the command in PATH. You may also see empty, 0-byte folders such as com.apple.WebKit.GPU+com.colliderli.iina under a temporary system directory after removal; macOS marks those undeletable and reclaims them itself, so they are not a sign of an incomplete uninstall.

If you installed it with Homebrew

Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or cannot be fully checked, and still cleans the leftovers you selected.

Running brew uninstall --cask --zap iina yourself runs the cask's zap list on its own and deletes every path in the table above, whatever you ticked in Mole's review list. If you want to keep your plugins or playback history, back them up first, or run the uninstall without zap:

    brew uninstall --cask iina

    Account and subscription

IINA has no account or subscription; removing it has nothing to sign out of or cancel.

    What Mole lists

~/Library/Application Support/com.colliderli.iina is selected by default, along with the cache, preferences and saved window state rows. The "Open in IINA" extension's Container and Application Scripts folder are name-continuations of IINA's own bundle id, so Mole lists and selects them by default too, the same as the rest of the app's own data.

    What this test covered

The recorded uninstall used the Homebrew cask on September 17, 2026, with a development build of Mole. The application, its cache, preferences and WebKit data were removed; three empty, protected com.apple.WebKit.*+com.colliderli.iina directories under a temporary system folder could not be removed and stayed at 0 bytes. Plugins and playback history were not present on the test Mac, so their removal was not directly verified beyond confirming the whole settings folder is gone.

On September 26, 2026, IINA 1.4.4 from the official disk image was opened and removed with a development build of Mole with every listed row checked. All 13 listed items went to the Trash, with none remaining at their original paths. Media playback, plugins and restoration of playback history were not verified.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
