How to uninstall iStat Menus on Mac

iStat Menus has an uninstaller built into the app, and Bjango's help page makes it the way to remove it. If you plan to reinstall later, keep your license key or purchase email first. The steps below cover the official Mac download and the Homebrew cask istat-menus.

    Use the built-in uninstaller

Choose iStat Menus › Uninstall from the menu bar, then click Uninstall. Bjango says this works even after your trial has ended, and if you already deleted the app by hand, download it again and run the uninstaller from it (iStat Menus install and uninstall help).

Where iStat Menus keeps its data

In Finder, press Shift + Command + G and check each location that exists. The system-level rows are the ones the Homebrew cask's uninstall step deletes, and they exist only if iStat Menus installed its helper.

Location What it holds What to do
~/Library/Application Support/iStat Menus 7 App data Review before removing
~/Library/Preferences/com.bjango.istatmenus.plist and the other com.bjango.istatmenus.*.plist files Settings Remove once you have kept your license key
~/Library/Logs/iStat Menus 7 App logs Safe to remove
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.bjango.istatmenus.installer, com.bjango.istatmenus.installerhelper Privileged helper files Remove once iStat Menus is gone; needs an administrator password
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.bjango.istatmenus.fans.plist A system launch daemon Same as above
/Library/Application Support/iStat Menus 7 System-level app data Same as above

    Check the result

    pgrep -il "istat menus"
launchctl list | grep -i istatmenus
    ls -d ~/Library/Application\ Support/iStat\ Menus\ 7
    ls /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools /Library/LaunchDaemons | grep -i istatmenus

    • If pgrep runs without errors and prints nothing, no process name matched istat menus; differently named helpers are outside that match. Check a listed PID and executable path before treating it as iStat Menus.
    • If launchctl list succeeds but the filter prints nothing, the current user job list has no line containing istatmenus; system-domain jobs are outside this check. Inspect a matching label and executable path to confirm its owner.
    • ls -d printing "No such file or directory" means that folder is gone.
    • If both system folders are read successfully without errors and the last filter prints nothing, no filename containing istatmenus was found there. A printed filename only shows an item is present, not that a complete installation or loaded service remains; inspect its actual path and owner. Reading errors leave the result unknown.

If you installed it with Homebrew

Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or cannot fully be checked, and still cleans the leftovers you selected.

The istat-menus cask's uninstall step unloads five iStat Menus jobs and deletes the two privileged helper files, the fans launch daemon, /Library/Application Support/iStat Menus 7 and /Library/Logs/iStat Menus on every removal, whether or not --zap runs. Its zap list also reaches your own preferences, caches, logs, cookies, web data and a widget container, plus a hidden .iStatMenus item in the Shared folder under Users. That item sits outside ~/Library, so Mole always leaves --zap out for a Homebrew-installed iStat Menus and removes only the rows you selected. Running brew uninstall --cask --zap istat-menus yourself trashes that whole list regardless of what Mole would tick.

    brew uninstall --cask istat-menus

    What Mole lists

For an officially downloaded iStat Menus:

    • The com.bjango.istatmenus preference files and ~/Library/Logs/iStat Menus 7 are selected by default.
    • ~/Library/Application Support/iStat Menus 7 is unchecked with Remove data and settings with apps off; enabling it can preselect eligible reviewed user data. Uncheck this row if you want to retain settings.
    • If the helper was installed, the two files in /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools, the com.bjango.istatmenus.fans.plist launch daemon and /Library/Application Support/iStat Menus 7 are listed but not selected by default. Tick them and Mole asks for your administrator password and moves them to the Trash with the app.

    What this test covered

iStat Menus 7.50 was copied to Applications from its official zip and uninstalled on September 21, 2026, with the official Mole 1.15.0 build 282. Only the app was copied and its built-in uninstaller was never run, so no helper was installed and its removal was not observed. The whole review list was ticked, and the app, its empty Application Support folder and its logs were trashed. iStat Menus · iStat Menus Alternatives: Pick the Monitor That Fits
