Uninstall LinearMouse on Mac
Back up your custom mouse and trackpad settings before quitting LinearMouse and moving it from Applications to the Trash. LinearMouse keeps them in one JSON file, ~/.config/linearmouse/linearmouse.json (LinearMouse configuration). Scrolling direction or pointer speed returning to macOS settings is an expected change after removal. These steps cover the DMG from linearmouse.app and the Homebrew cask.
Save configuration
Press Shift + Command + G in Finder and open ~/.config/linearmouse. If it exists, copy the whole directory to a backup; putting linearmouse.json back after a reinstall restores your settings. LinearMouse also checks ~/Library/Application Support/linearmouse/linearmouse.json first and uses it if that file exists (source), so back that up too if you find it.
Quit LinearMouse and remove the app
- Turn off LinearMouse's launch at login in its settings, or remove LinearMouse under System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions.
- Quit LinearMouse from its menu bar icon.
- Move LinearMouse from Applications to the Trash.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility, select LinearMouse, and click the minus button to remove its entry. Do not delete system permission or login databases to erase an old name.
Check the result
pgrep -il linearmouse
ls -d ~/.config/linearmouse ~/Library/Application\ Support/linearmouse
No output from pgrep means LinearMouse is no longer running. For ls, No such file or directory means that folder is gone; a listed path is still on disk, which is expected if you kept your settings. If its menu bar icon returns after login, check the running app's path and login item rather than inferring activity from an old permission record.
If scrolling or pointer behavior still looks wrong
After quitting LinearMouse, inspect the current mouse and trackpad options in System Settings, then test scrolling and pointer speed. This separates an app that is still controlling the device from a macOS setting that already had that value.
If you installed it with Homebrew
Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or cannot be fully checked, and still cleans the leftovers you selected.
Running brew uninstall --cask --zap linearmouse yourself runs the zap list regardless of which rows you check in Mole. It trashes ~/.config/linearmouse, your settings file, along with LinearMouse's preferences; the cask's uninstall step also removes its login item. Back up linearmouse.json first, or run brew uninstall --cask linearmouse without zap to keep it.
What Mole lists
| Location | In the plan |
|---|---|
~/.config/linearmouse |
Listed but not selected. |
~/Library/Application Support/linearmouse |
Listed but not selected, if present. |
~/Library/Preferences/com.lujjjh.LinearMouse.plist |
Selected by default. |
What this test covered
LinearMouse was installed from the Homebrew cask on September 17, 2026 and uninstalled through Mole. Accessibility permission was not granted, so the app never wrote ~/.config/linearmouse; Mole's row for it follows the cask's zap list and the documented location. Real configurations and specific mouse models were not tested.
