How to uninstall MacWhisper on Mac

MacWhisper keeps downloaded transcription models next to your settings, and those models can be much larger than the app itself. Decide whether to keep them before ticking that folder for removal. This covers the official download from MacWhisper's Gumroad page and the Homebrew cask macwhisper.

Quit MacWhisper and remove the app

    1. Quit MacWhisper from its application menu or Cmd+Q. No menu bar helper or login item was found registered for MacWhisper in testing.
    2. Find MacWhisper in Finder's Applications folder and move it to Trash.

MacWhisper also ships a Share Extension, the entry that appears in other apps' Share menu to send audio over for transcription. The extension keeps its own sandbox container, and an App Group container is shared between the app and the extension. Both are small, and neither goes away when you drag the app to the Trash.

    Where the data lives

Quit MacWhisper and close its Share Extension, then copy wanted settings and downloaded models outside their folder and check the copy before deleting app data. Press Shift + Command + G in Finder and open each path below, then move only unwanted app data to the Trash. Skip missing paths and keep the shared App Group when another app uses it or ownership is uncertain.

Location What it holds What to do
~/Library/Application Support/MacWhisper Your settings plus any downloaded transcription models Back up wanted contents before removing it. With Remove data and settings with apps off, Mole leaves it unselected; enabling the preference can preselect eligible app data. Uncheck it to retain your models.
~/Library/Caches/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper App cache Selected by default.
~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper Network cache and cookies Selected by default.
~/Library/Preferences/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.plist App preferences Selected by default.
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.savedState Saved window state Selected by default.
~/Library/WebKit/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper Embedded web view data Selected by default.
~/Library/Application Scripts/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper The app's own scripting support folder Selected by default.
~/Library/Containers/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.ShareExtension The Share Extension's own sandbox container Selected by default; macOS can refuse to move it, see below.
~/Library/Group Containers/8Q7TMPA46J.group.com.goodsnooze.macwhisper.share App Group container shared between the app and its Share Extension Not selected; Mole keeps it when it cannot confirm that no other app uses the group.

If you installed it with Homebrew

Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or cannot be fully checked, and still cleans the leftovers you selected.

The macwhisper cask's zap list includes ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, ~/Library/Application Support/MacWhisper, ~/Library/Caches/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, ~/Library/Containers/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, two ~/Library/HTTPStorages entries, ~/Library/Preferences/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.plist, ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.savedState, and ~/Library/WebKit/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper. Leave the folder holding your models unchecked to retain it; Mole then skips --zap and removes the selected rows itself. A direct brew uninstall --cask --zap macwhisper removes Homebrew's full list, including models, without reading Mole's checkboxes. Ordinary cask uninstall also quits MacWhisper by bundle id before removing it.

To uninstall without zap and keep your models:

    brew uninstall --cask macwhisper

    Check the result

    pgrep -il macwhisper
    ls -d ~/Library/Application\ Support/MacWhisper
    ls -d ~/Library/Containers/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.ShareExtension

    • If pgrep runs without an error and prints nothing, no process name matched macwhisper; that does not prove every extension or differently named helper has quit. Check the app and Share Extension in Activity Monitor against their actual executable paths.
    • ls -d on Application Support printing the path means the folder still exists, expected if you kept it; inspect its contents separately to confirm wanted settings and models remain.
    • "No such file or directory" for the Share Extension container means it is gone. A printed path means only that it remains; check whether you selected it and what the uninstall result reports before attributing this to a permission refusal. After closing the app and extension, you can try moving the exact container to the Trash in Finder. A permission error means the check could not establish its state.

    What Mole lists

For a MacWhisper app installed from the official download or the Homebrew cask:

    • ~/Library/Caches/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, ~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, ~/Library/Preferences/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.plist, ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.savedState, ~/Library/WebKit/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper, and ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper are selected by default.
    • ~/Library/Application Support/MacWhisper is listed but not selected with Remove data and settings with apps off. Enabling it can select eligible reviewed app data, including this folder with settings and models; uncheck it when they should remain.
    • The Share Extension's container ~/Library/Containers/com.goodsnooze.MacWhisper.ShareExtension is selected, because the extension's ID continues MacWhisper's own bundle ID.
    • The App Group container 8Q7TMPA46J.group.com.goodsnooze.macwhisper.share is never selected by default. Its name is a shared group form rather than MacWhisper's own group.<bundle ID>, and Mole keeps it whenever it cannot confirm that no other app uses the group.

    What this test covered

On September 21, 2026, MacWhisper 15.1.1 was downloaded from its official Gumroad page and uninstalled with Mole Preview build 282, with Full Disk Access granted, after every item was selected for removal. The app, its 129.3 MB Application Support folder, caches, HTTP storage and its own Application Scripts folder went to the Trash. The Share Extension's container stayed because macOS refused to move it (error 513), and Mole kept the App Group container as protected. This test does not show what happens when the Application Support folder is left in its normal, unticked default state, since it was selected for this run. Model downloads and transcription were not tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
