How to Uninstall Marked on Mac

Marked 3 previews Markdown files that live outside the app. Keep those source files and any custom export profiles before removing Marked; an exported PDF does not replace editable Markdown. The recorded test used a direct download, not a Homebrew installation.

Remove the app and inspect its data

Quit Marked 3 and move its app from Applications to Trash. Inspect the Marked support folder for export settings; do not follow old Marked 2 instructions for this 3.2.5 build. The recorded Application Support/Marked folder and app container are local state. Marked documents export profiles; keep the source Markdown in its own folder. Vendor guidance.

After quitting, copy wanted local state from the paths below to an independent private backup outside the removal folders and verify it. In Finder, press Shift + Command + G to open each path or its parent, then move only existing unneeded app-specific items to the Trash. Keep shared parents and other apps' files:

    • ~/Library/Application Support/Marked
    • ~/Library/Containers/com.brettterpstra.marked
    • ~/Library/Preferences/com.brettterpstra.marked.plist

For the historical Share-container failure, use the exact failed path in Mole’s details, open its parent in Finder, and move only the confirmed Marked extension directory to the Trash after quitting its owners and backing up wanted state. Keep it if another installed app or Marked copy uses it; the old record does not establish an exact extension ID to guess.

    Check the result

    ls -ld ~/Library/'Application Support'/Marked ~/Library/Containers/com.brettterpstra.marked

Run this read-only check after quitting the app. Each printed path still exists; an error for one path does not establish the status of the other. This check does not cover the Share extension container: if Mole reports a failed Trash move, read its exact path in the result and inspect that path separately before treating cleanup as complete.

    What Mole lists

With Remove data and settings with apps off, the listed Marked support review row starts unchecked; with it on, an eligible existing own unshared row may start checked. Back up wanted custom export settings and uncheck the folder to keep it; exact bundle-ID container and preferences are normally selected. Shared extension containers still need ownership checks.

    What this test covered

Marked 3.2.5 from the official package was removed on September 20, 2026. The selected support folder was removed, while a 4 KB Share container failed with Trash permission 513 and may still be present. No real document or export profile was created.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
