How to uninstall Snagit on Mac

TechSmith notes that dragging Snagit to the Trash removes only the application, and that your captures and settings are saved in other locations. Decide what to do with those before you delete anything beyond the app. These steps cover Snagit downloaded from TechSmith, plus a Homebrew section for the snagit cask.

    Quit and remove Snagit

    1. Before quitting, open Snagit › Settings › Advanced and record the actual library location, as TechSmith’s Mac migration guide describes; Snagit 2022 and later default to ~/Pictures/Snagit. Finish saving captures, quit Snagit, then copy the entire actual library and separately saved captures to an independent location outside sync and all removal folders, and verify editable copies before proceeding.
    2. In Finder's Applications folder, move Snagit to the Trash, as TechSmith's uninstall article for Mac describes. TechSmith also suggests restarting the Mac. Keep recovery possible until backups are verified, and permanently delete only the reviewed Snagit items rather than all Trash contents.

    Where Snagit keeps its data

Press Shift + Command + G in Finder and open each path that exists. The paths below are the ones the Homebrew cask lists for Snagit; a * stands for any text.

Location What it holds What to do
~/Library/Application Support/Snagit Snagit's own data folder, named after the app Open it and copy out anything you want before removing
~/Library/Caches/com.TechSmith.Snagit* Cache Safe to remove after quitting
~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.TechSmith.Snagit* Web storage Remove with the app
~/Library/WebKit/com.TechSmith.Snagit* Embedded web view data Remove with the app
~/Library/Preferences/com.TechSmith.Snagit*.plist App preferences Remove with the app
~/Library/Preferences/com.techsmith.snagit.capturehelper*.plist Preferences for Snagit's capture helper Remove with the app
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.TechSmith.Snagit*.savedState Saved window state Safe to remove
~/Library/Group Containers/*.com.techsmith.snagit and ~/Library/Application Scripts/7TQL462TU8.com.techsmith.snagit Snagit's App Group and its scripts folder Back up and review individually; retain while another installed app or Snagit copy uses them

Snagit's Quick Look and thumbnail extensions also have their own folders under ~/Library/Containers. In this test they stayed after the uninstall; see the test record below.

After all relevant app processes quit, copy wanted local state from the table paths to an independent backup and verify it, then open their parent folders in Finder and move only actual unwanted items belonging to the removed version to the Trash. A * is a matching pattern, not a literal folder name; keep retained versions and vendor parents. The current cask also names these leaves:

    • ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments/com.techsmith.snagit.sfl*

For Quick Look or thumbnail folders not named here, use the exact failed path from Mole’s details, confirm it belongs to this Snagit extension and no retained copy uses it, then back up wanted state and move that directory to the Trash in Finder. Keep protected or uncertain group data and the shared parents.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The snagit cask quits Snagit before it removes the app, and its zap list covers every path in the table plus Snagit's Recent Documents record. Running brew uninstall --cask --zap snagit yourself moves all of them to the Trash, whatever you selected in Mole, including Application Support/Snagit. For removal without the zap data list:

    brew uninstall --cask snagit

Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or a removal scope it cannot verify; selected remnants still follow Mole's own removal flow.

    Check the result

    pgrep -il snagit
    ls -d ~/Library/Application\ Support/Snagit
    ls ~/Library/Containers | grep -i snagit

    • No output from pgrep means this process-name pattern did not match; also check Activity Monitor for confirmed Snagit processes and quit those before deleting data.
    • ls -d printing the path means Snagit's data folder is still there; "No such file or directory" means it is gone.
    • The last command prints any container whose name contains Snagit. Quick Look or thumbnail extension containers showing up here match what this test left behind; no output only means this successful listing found no names containing Snagit, not that every extension identity is absent.

    What Mole lists

With Remove data and settings with apps off, the listed ~/Library/Application Support/Snagit review row starts unchecked; with it on, an eligible existing own unshared row may start checked. Verify independent copies of wanted files and uncheck the folder to retain it. Rows named exactly after Snagit's bundle ID, such as its caches, web storage and preferences, are selected by default. Mole never lists or selects a TechSmith vendor parent folder.

    What this test covered

Snagit 2026.3.3 was copied from TechSmith's official DMG into Applications and uninstalled live on September 20, 2026, with a Preview build of Mole, with every review row selected. The app and the empty Application Support/Snagit folder went to the Trash. The Quick Look and thumbnail extension containers stayed: Mole marked them as protected, and macOS refused to move them to the Trash. Captures, library content and license activation were not tested.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
