How to Uninstall TextMate on Mac
Save edited documents outside the app and copy any custom TextMate bundles before uninstalling. A project file is separate from the editor, while modified bundles can live in its support folder. The recorded test used a direct download, not a Homebrew installation.
Remove the app and inspect its data
Quit TextMate first. If you installed mate separately, locate it with command -v mate before removing the app. That can return an alias or function, so use only a filesystem path for the next check: inspect that exact item with ls -l or Finder's Get Info, then move only a link confirmed to target this TextMate.app copy to the Trash. Keep other copies' tools; no command match proves only that this shell did not resolve it. Then move TextMate.app from Applications to the Trash. Current TextMate source documents ~/Library/Application Support/TextMate/PasteboardHistory.db, and custom bundles may also live in the support folder. Inspect wanted changes there before removing it. After quitting, copy wanted local state from the paths below to an independent private backup outside the removal folders and verify it. In Finder, press Shift + Command + G to open each path or its parent, then move only existing unneeded app-specific items to the Trash. Keep shared parents and other apps' files:
~/Library/Application Support/TextMate~/Library/Caches/com.macromates.TextMate~/Library/Preferences/com.macromates.TextMate.plist~/Library/Preferences/com.macromates.TextMate.preview.plist~/Library/Saved Application State/com.macromates.TextMate.savedState
For ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpd/Generated/TextMate 2 Help*, open the parent and remove only matching TextMate help files. In ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.sharedfilelist/com.apple.LSSharedFileList.ApplicationRecentDocuments, inspect only com.macromates.textmate.sfl* files and remove unwanted TextMate records. The stars are filename patterns, not literal folder names; preserve both parents and other apps' files.
Check the result
ls -ld ~/Library/'Application Support'/TextMate ~/Library/Preferences/com.macromates.TextMate.plist
Run this read-only check after quitting the app. A printed path still exists; “No such file or directory” means that path is absent, while a permission error needs its own investigation.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The Homebrew cask has a zap list that includes Application Support/TextMate, caches, preferences and a recent-documents list. Ordinary cask uninstall also removes its managed mate binary. Run the command below without --zap if you want to keep those files and inspect them separately. A manual --zap follows the whole cask list regardless of Mole’s checkboxes. Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or a removal scope it cannot verify; selected remnants still follow Mole's own removal flow.
brew uninstall --cask textmate
What Mole lists
With Remove data and settings with apps off, the listed display-name support folder starts unchecked. With it on, an eligible existing own unshared row may start checked; back up wanted bundles and uncheck it to keep them; exact bundle-ID cache and preferences are normally selected. Project folders outside Library are not an uninstall target.
What this test covered
TextMate 2.0.23 from the official archive was removed on September 20, 2026. No project was written, and a 23 MB support folder remained because the review selection was not activated in that part of the batch.
