Uninstall WeChat on Mac without losing chat history
Save the conversations and attachments you need before removing WeChat. Tencent explains that chat history is stored on your devices and cannot be recovered from its servers without an earlier backup, so a conversation that exists only on this Mac is gone once its local data is deleted. Chats, downloaded files, and the Mac app are separate things: moving the app to the Trash does not delete the local chat database. This guide is based on WeChat installed from the Mac App Store and also covers the Homebrew cask wechat.
Check where your chats are saved
Inspect the backup and migration options available in your WeChat version and confirm the source and destination devices. Backing up phone chats to a computer is not proof that all Mac chats have been backed up to the phone. Save important Mac-only attachments to a folder of your own and open them to verify the copies.

Test recovery before deleting data
Open a few recent and older chats on a device you are keeping, and open saved images or documents to confirm they contain real data rather than only filenames. If a conversation is visible only on this Mac, keep local data until you have a working migration or backup method.
Where WeChat keeps its data
WeChat is a sandboxed app, so its data sits inside one container folder. The paths below come from Mole’s WeChat rules for WeChat 4; <account> stands for the folder named after each signed-in account. Open ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files in Finder and use the actual account folder name in place of that placeholder.
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat |
Everything below, plus settings | Keep it until your chats are backed up; deleting it deletes local chat history |
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/db_storage |
The chat database | Never delete on its own; it is your message history |
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/msg/file |
Documents you received | Treat as your own files; copy out what you need |
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/msg/attach and ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/msg/video |
Chat images and videos, in month folders | Older months can be cleared to save space, but expired originals may not download again |
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/cache and ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Documents/xwechat_files/<account>/temp/head_image |
Moments and service cache, avatars | Regenerable |
Older WeChat 3 installs used ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat/Data/Library/Application Support/com.tencent.xinWeChat/<version>/<account>/ instead, with chat media in Message/MessageTemp. If you only want disk space back, read WeChat Storage on Mac: Cache, Chat History, and Safe Cleanup before removing the app.
If you installed it with Homebrew
The wechat cask’s zap list includes ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat, WeChat’s Group Containers and its Mini Program and share-extension containers. brew uninstall --cask --zap wechat therefore moves your local chat history and received files to the Trash, whatever you tick. Mole never adds --zap for WeChat: it removes a Homebrew install like the command below. Back up your chats first, or remove only the app:
brew uninstall --cask wechat
Quit and remove the app
After saving what you need, quit WeChat from its app menu; closing a window does not quit it. Move WeChat from Applications to the Trash. If macOS says it is running, check Activity Monitor and quit the app before trying again.
Do not delete an entire directory just because its name includes Tencent. Other Tencent apps may use it. Keep data whose ownership is uncertain or which you may need for chat recovery.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after removing the app:
pgrep -il wechat
du -sh ~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChat
- No output from
pgrepmeans WeChat has quit. A listed process means it is still running; quit it before touching its data. duprinting a size proves only that this directory is readable and occupies that space, not that chats are complete or recoverable. Use the recovery checks above for the actual conversations. “No such file or directory” concerns this path alone, not other copies; a permission or read error leaves its state unknown.
Also check your saved attachments and chats on the device you kept. A shared Tencent directory may remain after removal without meaning WeChat failed to uninstall. Check other installed apps such as QQ before attributing individual files.
What Mole lists
When you remove it with Mole:
~/Library/Containers/com.tencent.xinWeChatis listed but not selected, because it holds your only local copy of the chat history; tick it only once your chats are backed up.- Mole’s Clean tab never offers
db_storage,msg/fileor the current month’s media. It lists older months of chat images and videos, the service cache and the avatar cache, none of them selected by default. - Directories shared by several Tencent apps are not listed.
What this test covered
WeChat is installed on the test Mac from the Mac App Store and was not uninstalled. On September 22 and 23, 2026, a development build of Mole previewed its uninstall list for that installation without removing anything, and a comparison against WeChat’s files on disk found nothing missing. In that preview Mole still selected the 3.1 GB container by default. Uninstalling, chat migration and chat recovery were not tested, so this page does not certify a complete backup or promise that chats can be restored.
