    Uninstall Xcodes on Mac

Record which Xcode versions and simulator runtimes Xcodes installed before removing the Xcodes interface. Those developer tools have their own lifetimes. The September 19, 2026 record covers the app copied from the official package.

    Quit and remove the app

Quit Xcodes, then move Xcodes.app to Trash. Leave installed Xcode apps, Archives and simulator data untouched; switching the active Xcode is not an uninstall step. The official page has more product information.

    Review the app’s data

The current cask names the historical helper /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.robotsandpencils.XcodesApp.Helper and ~/Library/Application Support/com.robotsandpencils.XcodesApp. The current upstream helper identifier is com.xcodesorg.xcodesapp.Helper, as shown in the official repository, so deleting the old cask target does not establish that a current installed helper is gone. Its removal procedure was not verified in the app-copy test. Check System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions for an Xcodes background entry and turn it off if present; if an installed privileged helper remains, use Xcodes support to identify and remove that component before calling the system-level uninstall complete. Do not delete an unrelated helper by its name.

The historical support folder held available-xcodes.json in the test. After quitting, copy any wanted settings from that folder, then use Shift + Command + G in Finder to open its parent and move only com.robotsandpencils.XcodesApp to the Trash if no longer needed. Keep installed Xcode apps, Archives and simulator data separate.

If you installed it with Homebrew

The Homebrew cask has its own --zap list. brew uninstall --cask xcodes-app removes the cask without that list; brew uninstall --cask --zap xcodes-app also acts on its listed data without consulting Mole’s checkboxes. The historical folder and helper need separate ownership checks. Zap reaches /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools, outside Mole's user-Library boundary, so Mole omits zap. Direct zap only targets the old helper file and is not a verified removal route for the current helper. Mole skips --zap when its list reaches unchecked or shared data, or a removal scope it cannot verify; selected remnants still follow Mole’s own removal flow.

    brew uninstall --cask xcodes-app

    Check the result

These commands inspect the running process and the historical support and helper locations. They do not remove anything:

    pgrep -il "Xcodes"
    ls -ld "$HOME/Library/Application Support/com.robotsandpencils.XcodesApp"
    ls -l /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.robotsandpencils.XcodesApp.Helper

No pgrep match means no process with that name is running; a match needs identification before quitting anything. A listed path still exists, while an ls “No such file” error means only that exact path is absent. A permission error is inconclusive.

    What Mole lists

With Remove data and settings with apps off, Mole lists the historical support folder for review, unchecked. With it on, this eligible unshared support row can be preselected; uncheck it to keep it. Exact current bundle-ID rows can be selected by default; it does not remove Xcode versions or Apple developer data.

    What this test covered

The September 19, 2026 official-package test covered Xcodes 4.1.1. A background-item entry still pointed at the trashed app afterward, and the historical support folder was a review row. Xcode installations were not removed.

If Mac apps leave files behind after uninstalling, try Mole. I've personally tested and inspected 799 Mac apps.
